Brian Bittner’s Winter

March 30, 2011 — Winter has come and gone for most of us.  The view even from out my window presents just a spattering of snow.  For the greater portion of Vermont, however, winter is still here.  I am anxious to make the post-hole hike up to a couple of boulders that I haven’t seen since last fall.

It seems many folks have had great winters getting strong training indoors and staying psyched on those couple trips they were able to make to better conditions.  My winter was not without such a trip and although just a taste it, was enough to keep the motivation up.

With my girlfriend Jenny, and Jake List taking the role of ‘third-wheel’, we booked it down to the dirty south and bouldered at Little Rock City for a week, not without a sidetracked weekend visit to Boone.  It was in Boone that I managed one of my prouder sends, taking down Full Throttle (V11) in a day.  And in LRC I managed to send Biggie Shorty, flash Robbin’ the Toothfairy and tick off a number of other classic moderates.  Jake stepped up his game and sent a couple Tony Lamiche and other crimp test pieces before we headed back North.  Jenny, too, was not without a quality trip, climbing very well for herself and coming oh so close on Fat Cat (V5).

Back in Vermont, plastic has been the name of the game.  A competition at Petra Cliffs put Jake in the drivers seat where he belongs.  Although I climbed well and fell just one hold short of him on the last finals problem, flashing the others as he did up to there, Jake appears to be superhuman and I, well, am not.

A big thanks for all the support and fantastic gear from my sponsors, Darn Tough Vermont, Five Ten and Outdoor Research.

Until next time,

-Brian Bittner
